LONDON (Reuters) - Channel 4 is courting controversy with what it calls a "shockingly real" drama about the fictional assassination of President George W. Bush.

"Death of a President," shot in the form of a documentary examining the assassination, will use a blend of archival footage and computer-generated special effects to portray Bush in October 2007 arriving in Chicago during an anti-war rally.

In the film, Bush is killed by a sniper, and the investigation quickly focuses on a Syrian-born man. It will air in October on Channel 4's More4 digital channel, as well as at the Toronto Film Festival in September.

"It's a pointed political examination of what the war on terror is doing to the American body politic," said More4 boss Peter Dale at a press conference on Thursday.

Promotional materials described the programme as "a thought-provoking critique of the contemporary U.S. political landscape."

Dale acknowledged that the programme will be controversial, but maintained that it was a sophisticated work meant to spur debate.

"I'm sure there will be people upset by it," he said. "I hope people will see the intention as a good one."

Channel 4, which is publicly owned but funded by advertising, was criticised last week by outgoing ITV Chief Executive Charles Allen for its reliance on reality TV shows and "shock docs".

More4's autumn schedule also includes "The Trial of Tony Blair," a satirical programme about the future resignation of the Prime Minister.

I think a better hypothetical film would be citizens storming the whitehouse.

Bush is Evil and a menace... but who is to say his successor will be better?

They won't let another Kennedy ascend to power in these times, that's for sure.. whoever is candidate for next powergrab/election will also be totally amoral, if they even go through the nicetys of an election

I'm guessing the next manchurian candidates will be H. Clinton, Leiberman, Jeb Bush and maybe even Chenney...it will be the neocons and neolibs in a grand alliance and a facade that they will call a fair and balanced elections with the winner no different the others with more wars, more centralized power to the government, more police state measures, more prisoners, more death, more fear, more terror....actually I think that by the time the next president is done with his/her two terms people will be yearning for the good old days of Bush.

As for the show I think its more propoganda to the elites, having Bush assasinated puts an aura to him like the one that Lincoln and Kennedy have had after they were assasinated which will make more people support him and think that he was right and all that crap. What I'd like to see as a reality show is Bush, Blair, Ulmart and the elites stink bags behind bars for wars crimes and genocide.

the title of those movies would propably be 'defeat of the Anarchists after the troops, tanks and choppers appear' :blink:

They're just waiting for such a thing.. images of an out of control mob, some destruction of property maybe, if they're really lucky some group charging and beating up some cops.. preferably thousands of people.

Then they can call in the national guard and declare martial law then and there :(

in Italy during a G-8 summit there where teams of cops dressed as protesters, after which they could charge claiming a peacefull crowd started the violence. This was all video documented and was headline news for a couple of days here.

Not because of the violence itself, but because one APC had driven over some poor sob several times killing him, which got filmed on video. I think I recall they drove over him 3 times.

And this was several years ago, in a 'Democratic' state which said it valued the rights of the individual, not in a warcrazed superpower about to slip into a nightmare.

This is some strange stuff... just having this rage across the internet must be playing havok with the keyword snarfing software used by the secret service and nsa.

Note the assassin is a Syrian.

Either way its a pretty interesting scenario, especially that part about Bush becoming a Neo-Con Evangelical martyr.

That is a scary idea.
