Mysterious light streaks across sky

SEATTLE – Around 7:30 p.m. Monday, KING 5 News' phones started to ring as viewers reported seeing a ball of flames shooting across the skies of Western Washington.

The calls came in mostly from Pierce and Kitsap counties.

Michael Witig and his wife were out barbecuing when they saw something streaking through the sky. They kept rolling as the fiery tail grew behind the mystery object.

KING 5 News contacted the Air Force, FAA, National Weather Service and other local authorities, but could not immediately find an explanation for what streaked across the sky and what was caught on tape.

Illuminated contrail was it. What do you think? Glad you posted this because I'd heard a snip just as I was leaving for work. I've tried to keep up with all of the mysterious booms, flashes, etc. over the past few years.

Probably is an illuminated contrail. From the pics, the trail seems to be composed of two distinct lines - which you'd expect from a plane. Also, if the video was taken at sunset, that'd certainly be a major factor in its appearance. Its a shame there are no nearby clouds to compare it to, because they would look the same too.

IMO it looked a little too bright to me for being an illuminated contrail at sunset. Was it moving or stationary?

I am both,I wouldnt go by what the F.A.A say about this anyhow
it sure didnt look like no aircraft

I was listening to last nights Rense today at work. Rense had Peter Davinport on. Major Ufologist. He reviewed this case on the show and he confirmed that he see's this all the time, and that TV stations actually call him as the expert to confirm what the phenominon is.

He says it is unfortuantly, just a contrail with the sun reflecting off it. He say's he's done alot of study on the phenominon and it's not uncommon, especially at sunset and sunrise.

Well, not for nuthin, but UFO sightings are not uncommon either. That doesn' mean they are all weather balloons or swamp gas :)

Emergency services in New Zealand were swamped with calls after a sonic boom, probably caused by a meteor, shook the south of the country.
Residents in Christchurch on the South Island said that the huge noise rattled their houses and made the ground shake.

Some witnesses described a bright streak of light in the sky.

The likely cause was a "very low" travelling meteor, a meteorological official said.

"I saw the end of it," Matthew Miller, who was working south of Christchurch, told local radio. "It was quite big and bright and it was just shooting across the sky, then the light went out."

The boom shook buildings and windows across central parts of the South Island.

"It started off with a little boom then a real massive boom. And I mean massive - like the daddy of all booms," Christchurch resident Kevin Graham told the New Zealand Press Association.

"I ran outside because I thought my place was going to collapse as well," he said.

A spokesman for Christchurch emergency services said they were flooded with calls just after the boom, which occurred at 1453 local time (0253 GMT) on Tuesday.

Alan Gilmore of the Mt John Observatory said the meteor was probably between the size of a baseball and a basketball.

The boom would have been caused either by the meteor moving faster than the speed of sound or it burning up in the earth's atmosphere.

There are no reports yet of anyone finding the meteor.
