The Missing Persons Myth

Ok. I'm tired of this "astronomical numbers of missing persons" myth that nearly a million people go missing every year in America. It needs to stop.

It's simply an issue of people not doing their homework and believing what they want to believe.

Yes, it's true that roughly 800 000 people a year are reported missing.
These figures are mis-leading. Not every person who is REPORTED missing stays missing. They still record the total number of recorded cases for statistical reasons, which is totally seperate from the actual numbers of people who turn up.

Most of them turn up.

As of December 31, 2005, there were 109,531 active missing person records in NCIC. Juveniles under the age of 18 account for 58,081 (53.03 %) of the records and 11,868 (10.84 %) were for juveniles between the ages of 18 and 20. *

During 2005, 834,536 missing person records were entered into NCIC, an increase of 0.51 % from the 830,325 entered in 2004. Missing Person records cleared or canceled during the same period totaled 844,838. Reasons for these removals include: a law enforcement agency located the subject, the individual returned home, or the record had to be removed by the entering agency due to a determination that the record is invalid.

So there. At the end of 2005 only (lol, only) 109, 531 people remained missing in the United States cummilative from all previous years.

- In 2005 - 834, 536 people were REPORTED missing.
- And during 2005 -844, 838 people were cleared, from 2005, OR previous years.

So, this is based on all individuals. I don't know what percent of them is children. But at you can see, the number of missing people every year that don't turn up is much lower than you might have though.

Is 109 531 missing people over the past who know many years they keep records for? (could be 40 years) a large statistic? I don't know. I don't know how long they consider a person still missing and not dead.

I think people are declared dead after 7 years. If thats the case we have roughly 100 000 missing people every 7 years. A lower percent of that would be childlen. I don't know how they keep their records if they take you off the missing persons list when your declared dead or you remain as a statistic.

There still seems to be a high number of missing people. But still nothing like the myth. Draw your own conclussions. Do some more research. Hope this clears things up a bit and was a bit enlightening.

Alright, here's another stat for you, from missingkids.com. If you go to the link, notice the last stat here was taken in 2002, on the stats of missing children from 1999:

Ok, 797,500-58,200 abducted by non-family members, -115 for long-term non family abductions, -203,900 for family abductions. That leaves 535,285 missing that are UNACCOUNTED for.

Why is there only one report on there from 2002 for 1999? What happened with the other 535,285 missing? I emailed them syaing i was doing a reasearch project about this and got no response. Try for yourself and see what they say...

well its a pretty well known statistic that 2300 americans go missing everyday. now wether those statistic's reflect how many are returned i dont know. but yearly that means.
839,500 americans go missing each year if you use those statistic's.
so not quite a million.
you would think you would be bumping into missing people everyday, if they were still alive anyhow. thats a pretty big number.
