Alcohol responsible for 4% worldwide deaths Latest figures recently released by Canadian experts show that one in 25 deaths (4%) across the globe are somehow linked to alcohol abuse. Despite certain cardiovascular benefits reported for moderate alcohol consumption, the adverse effects of alcohol on disease and injury outweigh its benefits. Apart from the diseases directly caused by drinking (liver disorders), a wide range of other conditions such as mouth and throat, colorectal and breast cancers, depression and stroke have also been linked to drinking. According to the article published in The Lancet, alcohol accounts for 3.8% of all global deaths (around 1 in 25) as well as 5% of the years lived with disability. The increasing number of women drinkers has led to a considerable surge in the number of alcohol-attributable deaths since 2000; men, however, are five times more likely to die from alcohol-related illness. The average alcohol consumption is around 12 units a week worldwide; in Europe, however, the amount tops 21.5 units. The highest alcohol-related mortality rate is therefore reported in Europe, where 1 in 10 death is attributed to alcohol. Scientists warn individuals that the effect of alcohol-related disease is similar to that of smoking a decade ago. "We need an international framework convention for alcohol control, similar to that on tobacco, as soon as possible, to put into practice the evidence-based measures needed to reduce alcohol-related harm," said Professor Ian Gilmore.
