Genetically altered trees grow twice as fast

(AXcess News) Washington - Russian scientists claim that genetically altered birch and aspen trees have successfully grown in half the time within greenhouse environments. Now, the scientists are moving outdoors in an attempt to curb deforestation in eastern Europe.

Scientists from the Institute for Bioorganic Chemistry, who had created the mutant trees, explained that they wanted to stop the deforestation, which is changing the climate on the planet.

Ordinary trees grow slowly, while the genetically modified trees grow two times faster and genetically modified timber has higher quality.

The genetically modified trees will be planted in St. Petersburg and Nizhny Novgorod regions of Russia in October.

"These trees can help us save the original forests," say project leaders.

However, it is difficult to say now what influence may these forests have on humans.

The genetically modified trees contain more cellulose. For each species scientists created a number of different transgenic options that will grow in a greenhouse. Later the scientists plan to plant them on the field.

Scientists say that some transgenic elements cause allergies, so a walk in such a forest could end up in a hospital.

Until recently, Russian law banned the cultivation of transgenic plants. However, the scientists expect that the ban will be lifted soon and the best clones of trees will be planted on a large scale.

i just did a search on GMO birch trees and it wasn't pretty. :(
They have been playing with genetically altering trees for at least over a decade.

when you genetically modify a plant (hybridization is genetic modification too) then it detriments its ability to perform iron tro porosis. that is the process where a plant absorbs minerals from the soil, and turns them from a solid form into a liquid form that our bodies can absorb and use. there are NO other places to get minerals for your body then natural plants. the minerals in meat are inhibited by the protein and acid in meat. its all about greed and inpatience

Seems to me they could grow hemp to replace most of what trees are cut down for, after all, hemp was what was used in many applications before corporations seen they could use trees. There would still be some uses for trees that would be but even they could be replaced by like bamboo, even in structural building. No need to basterize the trees. Quick growing trees have proven to break easier in wind and die quicker.

Old people say there are 2 kinds of people, those who plant an Oak and those that plant a Maple. Those who plant a Maple expect to enjoy in their lifetime. Those that plant an Oak know they may never enjoy the benefits of their planting... but their cgildren and grandchildren will. I think we've planted enough Maples.

Wheat is a "genetically-modified" grass. It has a triploid gene which occurred by chance and was selected (by Man) around twelve thousand years ago.

Not everything genetically-modified is bad.

The case you site isn't genetically modified but by selection. Early corn was done by selection. Genetically modified corn however is different, as would be genetically modified wheat, soy, etc. I haven't seen any benefits of true genetically modified food.

the process of genetically modifying plants is what causes what are called "dangerous free radicals". this is done by the random nature of modification. even in a laboratory it is still essentially random since the infinite divisions of atoms are beyond mans scope of knowledge. we know we can spilt a quark into a hundred smaller pieces, or even a million smaller pieces. but we do not know the properties of these pieces. billions of years of naturally occuring homeostasis is a much wiser scientist then we could ever be.

and for your information wheat is nothing to praise. let me show you the difference in mineral density when comparing wheat and a natural grain (amaranth)

http://www.netnutritionist.com/qa13.htm

wheat also contains free radicals and is acidic (about 5.5). acid forming foods are a symptom of plants that are hybridized. even many vegetables. and the ph level of food is extremely important to nutrition.

There's a big difference between selectively breeding plants for traits and cut and pasting bits of genetic code with an incomplete knowledge of how DNA pieces function and no real understanding of the long term consequences of the splicing.
