Description
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Today we showcase the field work of one of the CBC's finest reporters: Patrick
Brown. He's a journalist who, for more than a generation, has traveled to the
world's most dangerous places to bring back for us important and fascinating
and always moving human stories. In this documentary, Patrick Brown goes into
the hills with a persecuted people in hiding and brings us an unforgettable
story of the Karen minority and their struggle against the military
dictatorship that has them on the run.
Myanmar, or as it's better known by its former name, Burma, is a closed
country that's notoriously difficult for journalists to report on. That is
because it is run by a military dictatorship considered one of the most
repressive in the world. It keeps dissenters tightly locked in, and foreign
reporters firmly locked out. That hasn't discouraged the CBC's Asia
correspondent Patrick Brown who travelled there to report on a human rights
story the government would like to keep a tight lid on. That's the brutal
persecution of the Karen people. The Karen have strived for regional autonomy
for about sixty years. To escape forced labour and violence, the Karens hide
in the hills, constantly on the run. Some manage to escape, and about 2,000
have recently been accepted into Canada, but theirs is a largely forgotten
tragedy. In this documentary, Patrick Brown chronicles their lonely struggle.
