Jews Murdered Christians For Blood During Middle Ages
LAHORE: Italy’s Jewish community has been reeling from allegations made in an as yet unpublished book, which claims that in the city of Trento in modern day northern Italy, the blood of Christians murdered by Jews during the 11th and 14th centuries was often mixed with dough to make azzimo – the traditional unleavened bread eaten at Pesach, Jewish Easter.

“Easter of Blood” - penned by Jewish academic Professor Ariel Toaff – also claims that this represented part of a larger trend whereby Jews murdered Christians to use their blood for “magic and therapeutic practices”, as reported by the Daily Telegraph last week.

Noting that the extracts of the book had already appeared in the Italian daily, Corriere della Sera, the British-based paper went on to report that Prof Toaff alleged that the ritual killing was carried out by members of a “fundamentalist” group in reaction to the persecution of the Jews. The book also describes the mutilation and crucifixion of a two-year-old boy to recreate the execution of Christ at Pesach – the festival marking the fleeing of the Jews from Egypt.

But the author has been keen to stress that his work is based on the recorded confessions of those captured and tried for the practice, adding that many were executed after confessing to the “crucifixion” of Christian children.

However, among the leading Jewish figures vehemently denying the book’s claims is the author’s father Elio – a former chief Rabbi of Rome. The Telegraph quoted the joint statement issued by Italy’s senior rabbis, including Elio Toaff, condemning the book.

“There has never existed in Jewish tradition any permission or custom for using human blood for ritual purposes. Such a practice is considered with horror.

“It is absolutely improper to use centuries old statements, extracted under torture, to formulate singular and aberrant historical theses. The only blood shed in these stories is that of many innocent Jews.”

But Prof Toaff, who teaches mediaeval and Renaissance history at Jeruslaem’s Bar Ilan University, slammed the reaction as a “disgrace”, pointing out that none of the senior rabbis had yet read the book since it had so far remained unpublished. Reiterating that the murders had been committed by “a small group of fundamentalists”, he pointed out that he was not seeking to malign the entire Jewish faith. Attacking the whole of Judaism, he said, would be tantamount to allowing the acts of Muslim extremists to tarnish the entire Islamic faith. daily times monitor

Fair enough, maybe. But why did christians murder the jews? It sounds like the jews at least had a reason, but the christians didn't find any use for their piles of dead? And I hope to hell that Michelle doesn't remember me.

Of course, Jews under torture also admitted to causing the plague by poisoning wells with--get this--the skin of basilisks, a mythical creature. Torture is a good way to get someone to admit anything you want them to admit.

Dunno about the testimony. but this is interesting nonetheless:

Quote:BASILISK occurs in the D.V. as an equivalent for several Hebrew names of snakes:

(1) Péthén (Ps. xc, 13), the cobra; had the Latin and English translators been more consistent they would have rendered this Hebrew word here, as in the other places, by asp;
(2) Céphá' and Cíphe 'ônî (Prov., xxiii, 32; Is., xi. 8; xiv, 29; Jer., viii, '17;
(3) 'éphe'éh (Isaiah 59:5), a kind of viper impossible to determine, or perhaps the echis arenicola;
(4) flying sãrãph (Isaiah 14:29; 30:6), a winged serpent (?), possibly also a reptile like the draco fimbriatus, which, having long ribs covered with a fringe-like skin, is able to glide through the air for short distances.

Poisonous snakes maybe?

That is interesting.

As far as poisonous snakes go, the skin wouldn't be very harmful, just the head. Even then, it would be very difficult to seriously harm a large population that way. And it wouldn't be contagious, or even look very much like a contagion.

The Black Death originated in Mongolia and China, particularly Hunan province. It progressed in waves, following trade routes. It has long been thought to be bubonic plague. The descriptions sure sound like it, but boy it spread awful fast for that. Of course, hygiene was poor at the time and pests were ubiquitous; bubonic plague would have been spread by fleas.
