'harry Could Quit Army Over Iraq Ban'
Quote:Prince Harry could quit the Army if he is prevented from going to Iraq, Household Cavalry Regiment sources have claimed.

It follows reports that the 22-year-old Second Lieutenant, who is third in line to the throne, could find himself desk-bound instead of on the front line over Army officials' fears about his safety.

The Ministry of Defence has said the situation is under "constant consideration" but there have been claims the prince could find himself desk-bound during his six-month deployment over concerns about insurgents' plans to target him.

The Household Cavalry source said: "This comes as a huge surprise. As of today, as far as the regiment's concerned, he is definitely, definitely going.

"This is what he signed up for and if he doesn't go, he will sign off and leave. He joined the Army for a bit of excitement and for him to be told he's not going would be awful."

The source claimed Harry's colleagues would be equally devastated, saying: "There will be bad feeling in the regiment if they stop him."

Harry will get the best protection possible from his troop, the source said, adding: "He has his troop, and the protection of his troop, and his vehicle.

"His troop will not just protect him but all the guys. He is just as important as the youngest guy in his troop. They are all there to do their bit."

Harry, a member of "A" Squadron of the Blues and Royals, said in an interview to mark his 21st birthday: "There's no way I'm going to put myself through Sandhurst and then sit on my arse back home while my boys are out fighting for their country."

A joint statement from Clarence House and the MoD in February said: "Whilst in Iraq, Cornet Wales will carry out a normal troop commander's role, involving leading a troop of 12 men in four Scimitar armoured reconnaissance vehicles, each with a crew of three."

Prime Minister Tony Blair said that decisions on Prince Harry's deployment to Iraq were "a matter for the Army" and declined to comment further.
