To a Catholic, the crucifix is the reminder that God so loved the people that He sent himself to experience what His creation experienced in every temptation, but because He was fully God, he never sinned, he was always innocent, but He experienced every temptation mankind does.

Because of the long story, there was a reason why he had to be crucified, and before He was crucified He saw every single epoch and every single sin that ever ever happened or would happen and took that all into himself, that was in the Garden of Gessemane where he sweat blood, and then He became the purifying sacrifice for all time. Never would there be another sacrifice required ever. Prior to that, the wage of sin was death. (Anne Catherine Emerich a stigmatist who lived off no food or water and recounted the vision of the Passion gives an intense account of the meaning of that.)

But I wear a crucifix because it is that personal. He did it for me, there is no greater love than that. So it is not a symbol of worship, it is a remembrance of HUGE LOVE. And I personally feel it is the least I could do show my appreciation for that.
