Does anyone know of any good video editing (cut and merge) software that is also free of charge, free of spyware?

For avi; VirtualDub and/or aviDemux2 (both open source)

and for mpeg, tmpgenc has a 30 day trial for their transcoder but the merge/cut/plex tools are free forever

Thanks for the tips guys. For now, avidemux does the trix for me. I've never really gotten along very well with Virtualdub, and yet another attempt didn't really made much of a difference in this shaky relationship.

I use the AVS Suite as well. It's pro software, so no sacrifices in quality and yet is easy to use. Good stuff.
