When Kachinas Remove Their Masks?
Unfortunately Kachinas aren't so "indigenous" after all -- this is a post I made on http://ufomystic.com a few days ago:
I googled kachinas and sex magic and found a fascinating recent book on Elsie Clews Parsons, wherein page 228 or so focuses on Parsons 1928 anthropology study: Spanish Elements in the Kachina Cult of the Pueblos. Parsons details how Spanish saint veneration was assimilated into Pueblo culture and then reemerged through the Kachinas. I find this post-Spanish transformation of indigenous cultures to be the case throughout most of Latin America. Fortunately Martin Pretchels book Secrets of the Talking Jaguar is a very amazing peak into a culture completely based on gender-induced spirit communication, using poetic music. Too bad this unique preservation of pre-Colombian spirit communication was subjected to another evangelical genocidal conversion soon after Pretchel was trained as a shaman. |
