Politically close too it would seem back in the 40's. :whatthe:
I was rather astonished to learn many dutch were in the "bund", which apparently
was nazi-sympathetic whilst my grandfather risked his life driving around your then flooded
swamp in his sherman tank to "liberate?" you.

:LOL:Indeed, Hardboiled must be pretty proud of his warning rating and yes of course you're cool too even if you only have a zero warning rate. But why don't you understand Dutch? It's linguistically pretty close to German. I can manage a bit, and my German was pretty terrible in high-school. An yeah, German beer is probably quite good too, with a price to match the quality unfortunately.

ah well, I'm still trying to make headway with German, I'm sure it'll pay off with improving my understanding of Dutch eventually. In terms of beer, you couldn't be more right. Those friendly low prices certainly add something to the all round refreshing taste.

Indeed a quick glance at Wikipedia seems to prove you're right:

Quote:Netherlands

So many Dutch men had volunteered for the Waffen-SS that the country took many years to come to terms with the extent to which this had happened. Men who had volunteered for the Waffen-SS and returned to the Netherlands were interned. Subsequently some rose to prominence in the political and business fields, but because of their background they remained vulnerable to blackmail.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pursuit_of_Na...ors#Netherlands

Quote:The number of Dutch Nazi collaborators during World War II exceeded the number of those active in the resistance, even if one does not include in the first category the unknown number of those who stole Jewish property. Many cases are known of Jews who hid their possessions during the war with non-Jewish acquaintances and neighbors, who then denied any knowledge of this when the Jews returned after the war.

It is also not widely known that--relative to its population--The Netherlands had the highest number of Waffen SS volunteers in Western Europe. Giving these facts as much attention as the hiding of Anne Frank would help to balance the international perception of Dutch attitudes during World War II.

It's getting rather painful.

I didn't even know that. Pretty shameful stuff yeah.

Krijg nou wat! That's pretty good Brandon. There are a couple of errors but it's quite close. Yeah, let's change the station.

Cannot resist though. The last sentence corrected:
'Dank u voor de hulp' or 'Bedankt voor de hulp' or ''Dankjewel voor de hulp' (first name basis)

Have you ever been to Holland for a prolonged period of time by any small chance? I know you like biking so you may also have Dutch blood as well.

ah ok, thanks for the correction. i was going by the babel fish translator, which seems to be extremely deficient gramatically, but usually can help give some indication of what the conversation is about. but like with Dankjewel, it doesn't have anything to translate it to whereas Bedankt is translated to 'Thanks'.

I've never been to Holland, but would certainly like doing a bike tour over around those parts at some point. Regarding Dutch blood, who knows, I'm quite the mutt. hehe.

I didn't even know that. Pretty shameful stuff yeah.

It will get even nastier soon I think, when the US-secret service files about the Dutch royal house in and around WW2 get opened, some time in June of 2008 I think. It'll probably show the full involvement of our late Prince Bernhard with nazi-germany (in which he was a high-ranking officer for quite some time) which will go very very far...
I'll back this up with some links later, if anyone's interested. Don't have the time to look for them now though.... anyway, it'll be a nasty history-lesson for many dutch I suppose..

And about Grolsch; I happily live about 10 kilometers from the Grolsch-factory  ...well, I still do, Grolsch has been sold to another company last week and the productionfacility will probably move within a couple of years (allthough it's a brand-new productionfacility). The lower the wages, the bigger the profit, eh?

...60% on your coolnessmeter HBNWOK... can I have your picture? I know I'm not worthy, but...

Blond and blue eyed people in galore in this corner of the world (as is for instance yours truly too), what can I say other than the Dutch and the Germans are very closely related indeed (as are the Dutch and British for that matter). Fortunately, there's no SS affiliation whatsoever on either side of my parents. I know a guy who's family was involved with the SS though, and he's quite proud of it too. Oh well....
