My nephew is using Ubuntu .....

he took his brother's old laptop XP with just enough disc space
to load Ubuntu. So he took out XP and the only problem
I recall was the page load of one of those computer stores.

He went on the get enough Christmas presents to build
a Desktop and put in Ubuntu.

I saw him operate the laptop with the odd page load.

well I reload again last night T&L.I loaded just the programs I need.Had it all running the way I wanted but from time to time the post button on any forum would not work.Hmmmmm makes me wonder if you know what I mean.TPTB?Well lets see how long it takes this time lol.I have a way to keep an eye on it this time,if something changes I will know for sure,it will just take a while for me to go through it but it has to be done.I really want to get away from MS been hearing faint whispers lately.I would much rather run code everyone can look at.

I don't see the advantage of linux since at least XP has
perguardian and AVG7 to block and detect unwanted incoming transmissions.

The nephew uses firefox and I might have mentioned at few things to him
but didn't press... got to let these young one go with their own network.

I can tell XP appears to attract a lot of traffic even when not loading pagers.

In my opinion, I found Gusty Gibbon (7.10) to be less stable than Feisty Fawn (6.xx) though I couldn't tell you what the root cause was for it. I actually decided to roll back to F.F. after upgrading to G.G., though since I run a multi-boot HyperOS system, it wasn't an issue. I usually have backup images of whatever OS I need. Odd as it may sound, I actually have a version of XP running that satisfies my needs for security and privacy.

Ubuntu does have a peerguardian like program and firewalls, so it's not as if you can't tell who it's connected to btw. One just has to look around for them.

I'm noticing this too. I get all kinds of adept-updater conflicts when doing even the most simple admin functions.
I think I'm going to roll back myself until they sort it out.

id like to know what the gibbon was stopping you from doing. Unstable is not a word i would describe gutsy gib. You can crash it if you run eve online with compiz running. compiz looks great but its doesnt alwasy have a high compatability rating with say, WINE.

moblocker works in place of peerguardian for linux

i've been running 8.04 since its release. initially i had a problem with the sound but since i got that sorted it's been sweet as a nut - and super quick.

i am never ever going anywhere near another microsoft product - i feel liberated.

Make sure your repositories don't have any conflicts. Certain apps are better compiled and installed from source. like azures for example. Make sure you're using the right driver versions etc. That generally takes care of most things. I'm using Ubuntu 7.04 and it runs perfectly. The kernel is fine to my knowledge.
