(remedy) Private Vehicles - Excempt From Registration and Licensing
Many have obtained a US DOT number, http://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/registratio...escription.htm
to display while DRIVING. (YES, you may freely travel!) Although the number is not required for private driving, it is used to help indicate and express lawful PRIVATE status.

Obtaining a number is free. (A credit card is required for expediting the process in order to obtain a US DOT number immediately but the card is not charged. It is only verified as a valid card. Otherwise the form may be printed out and sent in.)

Put the number on your own custom plate or paint it directly on the vehicle, like truckers do.

The same number may be displayed on ALL your vehicles.
(One should remove their STATE plates while driving privately. It is debatable whether or not one should cancel the STATE registration on the vehicle) Local and state agencies DO NOT have jurisdiction to stop someone for vehicle code violations while displaying ONLY this number. Meaning that NO DRIVER'S LICENSE OR REGISTRATION is required for someone DRIVING a VEHICLE in "private".

Your current plate is saying your vehicle is for commercial use, when you use a private plate that means your vehicle is not operating in commerce and not subject to statutes within your state or provinces vehicle code. Your PRIVATE.

Every vehicle (with the exception of tractors, etc.) driven on a public road in Ontario must be plated (annually) and insured or be subject to huge fines. No DOT number will exempt you.

You might get away with it once if at the mercy of a nice judge, but you'll never get away with it twice - they'll make a very expensive example of you.

think you got it backwards bud

Companies that operate commercial vehicles transporting passengers or hauling cargo in interstate commerce must be registered with the FMCSA and must have a USDOT Number. Also, commercial intrastate hazardous materials carriers who haul quantities requiring a safety permit must register for a USDOT Number. The USDOT Number serves as a unique identifier when collecting and monitoring a company’s safety information acquired during audits, compliance reviews, crash investigations, and inspections.
