Until recently, demographic issues such as population growth, age structures, and youth bulges did not generate much interest among environmental audiences. World Watch magazine's September/October 2008 issue, the Population Forum, is one sign that this is changing. Contributions highlight how population issues affect environmental degradation and climate change, as well as poverty, security, and the well-being of women and children.

Thomas Prugh will provide an overview of the September/October 2008 issue of World Watch, and Robert Engelman will present a short history of population trends. Karen Hardee will discuss the intersections of population, urbanization, and the environment, and Sean Peoples will comment on the security impacts of demographic factors such as population growth and migration. Several other authors will be in attendance to field questions during the discussion portion of the event.
