Combating Online Infringement and Counterfeits Act (COICA) - what's going on?
Got an email today stating that a 300,00o signature petition has "put the brakes on this legislation," Yet I can't find ho0w they define that, even on their own site, and none of the others that pop up in search engines are even close to current. Anyone have any idea what they're talking about?
For the uninformed: COICA is basically aimed at creating a web-site blacklist that will be enforced by the DOJ and NSA (possibly the military's CYBERCOM as well,) to stop bittorrent and related technologies. Kind of important for us here to know what's going on with it, as I'd suspect (for the subject matter rather than the copyright issues) that lil ol' concen would almost certainly make it to that list relatively quickly. There's been no shortage of examples to prove how the government is given inches and takes miles because of legislation like this. edit to add: finally figured it out - Ron Wyden (D-OR) put a hold on the bill, effectively stopping it from passage this session, even though the committee suggested it's inclusion for general senate consideration. I guess time will tell as to whether he's holding out for lobbyist contributions, or if he'll be able to convince others that this is a bad idea, but for the moment, the gvt will have to wait until 2013 to enact this piece of legislation. (A hesitant) "Good on ya, Ron!"
