Nato forces killed too many civilians in Afghanistan last year, their chief spokesman has starkly admitted.
Brigadier Richard Nugee said: "I believe the single thing that we have done wrong and we are striving extremely hard to improve on next year is killing innocent civilians."
But he added that coalition forces were winning their fight against the Taliban and that the rebels are losing support among the local population.
"In the first half, the Taliban believed their own rhetoric and believed that Nato, responsible for security across the whole country, would not fight," he said.
"So they took us on in a place of their choosing, in a hard fight, and they lost."
