Many people out there turn to VLC or Media Player Classic as alternatives to Windows Media Player, a program that is nowhere near a complete multimedia solution.

VLC and MP Classic are quite good, only that I've found during the past few years two other media players that could be just as good, or even better imo.

QQPlayer: I rely mostly on this program which is my favorite because of features and minimal resource usage. It was originally only in chinese, but was translated to English & Arabic by expert users. It plays nearly every audio/video file. Great features such as convert, merge, split or extract a/v. It can also compress video to your needs.

KMPlayer: A more popular player that has comprehensive features and is quite easy to use. It's also translated from Korean I think.

I've been using VLC the longest, then Media Player Classic. In more recent times have gone for the GOM Player over the KMPlayer, which I used for a few short months when VLC had issues. I also utilise Media Player Classic.

I have to admit though, when it comes to music (not just any audio), it's quite a different matter

There are other systems, too. Right now on Linux I have smplayer, VLC, Xine, Dragonplayer installed.

QQPlayer available for android phones aswell

I use SMPlayer, KMPlayer (yes it is Korean) and VLC.

Mplayer command line (no frontend) is great if you want to watch on an older system without a lot of RAM.

Be sure to get your codecs updated to watch everything without missing a beat (frame).

Haven't checked out GOM Player, Xine, QQPlayer or Dragonplayer ... yet.

When I was running Linux (Slackware at the time), mpg123 was my preferred audio player. I didn't bother with videos as I was rather happy working at the command line.

These days, under XP, I tend to use MPC Home Cinema. In the case of files that MPCHC doesn't load or plays horribly (like MP4), VLC works just fine. MPCHC's interface is more appealing to me, though, as the mouse movement can trigger the basic control panel.
