A US civilian contractor who was found guilty of mistreating a war detainee in Afghanistan has had a court appeal upheld.
Former CIA contractor David Passaro has had his prison sentenced reduced to less than seven years after the Court of Appeals found a technical breach.
Because the original judge had failed to explain the reason for giving Passaro a longer term than normally stipulated, his sentence has now been cut back.
Passaro was initially sentenced to more than eight years in prison after being convicted in August 2006 of beating a detainee with a flashlight and kicking him in the groin.
The man, Abdul Wali, later died.
The assault took place during an interrogation at a military base in Afghanistan in July 2003.
