well people been reading alot about utorrent and the buy out so last night i got rid of it from my pc now i use halite as my main torrent downloadder seems pretty much the same as utorrent but is still in development. for those of you who want more features they will be coming.also for those of you that are using utorrent i was told to use 1.6 not 1.6.1 or higher till i found a replacement.this is just a heads up to the group, better safe than sorry.
Utorrent works fine for me and I recommend it.
Just use I.P filter and make sure all automatic updates are turned off
do that by checking where it says 'General' in the preferences menu
then untick 'Check for updates automatically' also
go to 'Other' located in the preferences too and untick
'Allow utorrent to send anonymous version number and random id when checking for new version'.

If you want to know how to sort out the i.p filter for utorrent
then look at this posted here - originally posted by fjaneson

will check out that client you mention though spud213
been using utorrent 1.6 with the ipfilter on and the new ip list every week from blue tack. However the problem with utorrent is the code.It is not public so there could be a back door in there and we would never know.Halite is public code so no problem there and has an ipfilter more good news.the down side is it is not working with private tracker's and a dht problem in the installer version.so every ounce in a while I stop there to see if they released the update yet also if you know what your doing you can compile in the updates yourself. As I have no clue on how to do that or what programs to use to do so[lol] I just wait and hope and try not to download any copy write material.if anyone knows how to compile this code for halite and trys the program please post here and let me know how it works Thanks Spud
yep that is it.I like it its like utorret just not as my features yet.Still is an ongoing project.I hope soon they will release v1.0 final instead of the 2.9 beta Mad do you understand what they are saying as far as compiling the code to make an up to date version.
I would wait for them to do that, unless your really good at programing
best thing I came across was this spud213 http://www.binarynotions.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=90
& http://trac.geekisp.com/halite
wiki to search - http://trac.edgewall.org/
You found the same pages I did Mad,not much info there for some one like me.I need a step by step lol.I also checked out arctic torrent which I like but does not have an ipfilter. My cpu is older which is my problem,I need to find programs that don't use a lot of ram.I can't see spending a $150 on ram and still be left with the rest of the short comings of this cpu.Been looking for a new cpu at a good price and the features I want.So soon I hope I will be able to find one with everything I need Spud
lol spud213, I tried all over the place aswell and thats the nearest I got to getting any info atall : /
Im like that too, I need a well detailed guide lol
hey arctic torrent isnt bad atall it uses the lowest of resources
much less than utorrent does too
but like you said it doesnt implement the i.p filter option
as far as i know it is open source though
I wonder if by request a build could be made with that specific feature
havent visted that page for a while either (artic torrent)
even so someone with some experience in programming
make a build...

have you ever tried out ziptorrent spud213 ?
shoulda provided link before - http://www.ziptorrent.com/
soz.
thanks Mad one more can't hurt lol.Tried just about all of them by now.
BitTorrent Inc ended up taking over as of version 1.6.1 -- or was it 1.6.0? Whatever the case I upped the old version here in it's original form when it was initially released on an earlier build of 1.6.1 in this post as an attachment for registered users to download.

Let's fast forward to the 3.0b version of uTorrent. Seems they may be taking user tracking to a whole other level in preying on the naive.

Quote:Where Are uTorrent’s Comments and Ratings Stored?

by Ernesto

Last week uTorrent rolled out the first Beta version of their 3.0 release. Among other things, uTorrent 3.0 allows users to rate and comment on the torrents they’re downloading. It’s a feature that many people have requested, but for the more privacy conscious user, it also begs the question where these comments and ratings are stored.

... basically, all comments and ratings associated with a particular file are shared among members of that swarm. If another peer has a comment that you don’t have already, it will send it to you, and vice versa. The messages are sent through the tracker and don’t rely on DHT, this means that they work on private torrent files as well.

....

The uTorrent engineer team further explained that comments are stored in the resume file for a torrent, which helps keeping comments alive across sessions. But other than on the computers of uTorrent users, the comments are never shared outside the swarm on a central server.

Although it’s good to know that uTorrent’s commenting and rating system is fully decentralized, it also introduces a new feature that may be less welcome. When comments and ratings become a new standard to check the quality of files in the future, there is no doubt that these features will be exploited by spammers to make fake torrents appear more legitimate.

Time will tell whether the ‘costs’ will outfit the benefits, and whether the unmoderated system will be able to handle the potential influx of trolls and spammers...
